Useful trip to Vientiane, Laos, for the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM). Happy to meet Singaporeans there too. One was the chef at our hotel – Haji Zainudin. He has been here since last year, and returns home every four months to be with his family. The General Mgr and Asst General Mgr are also from Singapore! This just shows what a global village we live in, and how mobile Singaporeans are.
Europe is important to Asia – as a market, investor, lender and source of technology. The Eurozone's problems have affected Asia too, and we wish the Europeans all the best in resolving them.
Such meetings are great opportunities to touch base with leaders whom I would normally not see. I invited a few to stop by Singapore en route to/from Laos. Poland’s PM Donald Tusk was here last Sunday, and Luxembourg PM Jean-Claude Juncker will be here tomorrow. – LHL
